ABOUT KALI
The municipality of Kali is located in the south of the island of Ugljan, which is part of the Zadar Archipelago. It is only 5 km away from the City of Zadar, an administrative centre of the county of Zadar, and is connected to the mainland through Preko ferry port. The old core of the town was built between Mul and Batalaža coves facing Zadar, while a newly built part of the town spreads to Mala Lamjana cove facing the Kornati Archipelago. Next to it, there is also Vela Lamjana cove, home to a fishing port and an industrial park. According to the 2011 census, Kali has a population of 1,638, making it the most populated town on the Zadar Archipelago islands.
Kali was mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1299, although there are traces of a settlement, dating back to the Prehistoric and Classical Antiquity periods (an archaeological site on Orjak hill). The modern town is built on a hill overlooking a small port of Mul and facing Zadar and the Zadar Channel. At an easy distance from the town centre, there is a parish church of St. Lawrence, dating from the 15th century, and St. Peregrine´s chapel, built in the 14th century.
The economy of the Kali municipality is based mostly on fishing and mariculture, and Kali is a home port to one of the largest fishing fleets in the Adriatic Sea, comprising more than thirty modern fishing boats of 20-40 in length that are specialised for fishing oily fish such as pilchards, anchovies and tuna. The residents of Kali work not only as fishermen but also as seamen for Croatian and international shipping companies. In addition, they are engaged in farming, especially in growing olives. There are 100,000 olive trees planted, and olive growers have joined forces to set up “Maslina Kali” farmers´ co-op, with a state-of-the-art oil mill.
